n8n vs Custom Python for AI Workflows

By Noman Aslam · Updated 2026-10-07 · 8 min read

Use n8n when the workflow is a chain of known apps and someone on the team needs to see each step. Use Python when the job needs custom parsing, careful retries, a large file, or a rule that no node expresses cleanly. Many production systems use both: n8n for the handoff between apps, Python for the step that is actually hard.

Choose with the constraint, not the trend

The trend in 2026 is to put an agent node in the middle of every flow. That is useful when the input is language. It is waste when the input is already a clean webhook. I start from the constraint that will still be true in six months: who has to debug it at 7am, and what are they allowed to see.

A split I use on client projects

  • n8n receives the order, the form, or the mailbox event.
  • Python normalises the payload, calls the model with a fixed schema, and refuses to continue when a required field is missing.
  • n8n writes the accepted result into Shopify, HubSpot, Xero, or the sheet.
  • Both sides log the same id so a failed row can be found once.

What the first week should prove

  1. One real input from last month, not a demo payload.
  2. One accepted output in the system of record.
  3. One rejected input that stops cleanly.
  4. A note of who fixes it when it stops.

That week is hourly work at $35. If the path is already clear, I will turn it into a custom quote with a fixed fee before the build continues.

Questions this page answers

Is n8n enough for AI automation?

Yes for a first version that calls a model, routes the result, and writes to a system you already use. Move the hard step to Python when the prompt, the file, or the error handling no longer fits in a node.

When is Zapier the wrong comparison?

Zapier is fine for a short, low-volume chain. It is the wrong place for private data, heavy files, or logic you expect to own for years. That choice is between n8n and custom code, not between two hosted zaps.

Can we start in n8n and rewrite later?

Yes, if the first version has a clear boundary. Keep the model call and the business rule in one place so the rewrite is a function, not a scavenger hunt.

Hourly work is $35. A fixed fee is a custom quote after we define the scope.
