Generative Engine Optimization for Service Businesses
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a page easy for AI answer engines to quote. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot prefer a page that states a direct answer, names the author, dates the claim, and answers one question per section. Classic SEO still gets the page crawled. GEO is what makes the page usable once an answer engine is writing the reply.
What GEO is, and what it is not
GEO is not a trick that hides keywords for a model. It is ordinary clarity. An answer engine is looking for a passage it can repeat without changing the meaning. If the only useful sentence on the page is buried under a story, the model either skips the page or invents a smoother version.
I use the same test I use on an automation brief: can a stranger act on the first paragraph? If the answer is no, the page is not ready for a person or for an answer engine.
How answer engines choose a source
- The passage answers the question in one or two sentences.
- The page names who is speaking and when the page was updated.
- Headings match the way people ask the question.
- Numbers, definitions, and steps can stand alone if they are quoted out of context.
- The site is already allowed to be crawled, with a sitemap and a stable canonical URL.
A page structure that gets cited
- Open with the definition or the recommendation. Do not open with the company history.
- Use a heading that is the question a buyer would type.
- Follow it with a short answer, then the conditions and the exceptions.
- Add a comparison only when the choice is real, and label both columns.
- Close with questions you are actually asked, each with a complete answer.
- Link to the service, the proof, and the next step with words that say where the link goes.
GEO compared with classic SEO
| Job | Classic SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Get the page found | Crawlable URL, title, internal links, sitemap | Same requirement |
| Match the query | Title and headings aligned to the search | Headings phrased as questions |
| Earn the click | A result snippet that is specific | A passage an answer engine can quote |
| Prove the source | Author page and about page | Named author, date, and a first-hand detail |
What I ship for clients
On automation projects I treat the public site as part of the system. Service pages state the outcome, guide pages answer the buying question, and the contact path is obvious. Schema is valid because invalid markup is dropped, not because schema alone creates a ranking.
If you want this applied to your own site, the work is usually a rewrite of the pages that already get impressions, plus two or three guides that answer the questions your sales calls repeat. Hourly work is $35. A fixed fee is a custom quote after the pages are listed.
Questions this page answers
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring a page so AI answer engines can lift a specific, sourced answer. It uses a direct opening answer, question-style headings, visible dates, a named author, and facts that do not depend on the surrounding paragraph.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. A page still needs to be crawled, indexed, and relevant for the query. GEO changes how the indexed page is written so an answer engine can cite it without guessing.
How long does it take to see AI citations?
There is no fixed window. Answer engines refresh on their own schedule. Pages that already rank and that were rewritten with a clear answer tend to be cited sooner than brand-new pages with no authority.
